Music Exams

There are a number of accredited exam boards which are offered in Cyprus, including Trinity Guildhall, Rockschool, ABRSM, and London College of Music. In the past I have put students through the Trinity Guildhall exams, and students have come away with high marks. However, since each student may have different needs or goals, we can explore all of the exam boards to decide which one is most suitable.

Exams are in no way compulsory, but are a wonderful opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing a career in music, any of the performing arts, or even for those who may just be interested in augmenting their musical knowledge and skills to help them in other disciplines. The Trinity Guildhall exams offer 8 graded levels, as well as a pre-grade 1 “Initial” exam, with the opportunity to pass with merit or distinction. Most of the other exam boards also offer a similar exam structure. Exams also serve as equivalents to the GCSE and A level examinations, and additionally offer the opportunity to accrue UCAS points.

Currently, the subjects that will be offered for exam preparation include Singing, Piano and Music Theory. However, if you would be interested in also taking exams in Keyboard, please see me so that we can discuss your needs and options.

Depending on your student’s grade level, it may be necessary to lengthen your child’s lesson or even schedule additional lessons in order to accommodate the extra material to be learned for these exams. These exams do a very good job of incorporating such elements as Music Theory, Sight Singing, Aural (Ear) Training, Improvisation and Musical Knowledge, which will require extra time during your child’s lesson. If there are enough students interested in a particular grade level, then it may be possible to establish a group class in order to cover the extra parts of the exam.

For your reference, the Trinity Guildhall exams are offered twice a year. The first exams take place in May/June, to be registered for in January, and the second exams take place in November/December, to be registered for in August. Full exam fees are to be paid when submitting the registration forms, and are non-refundable.

Fees for the Trinity Guildhall exams to be taken in 2011 are not available at the present time, however, for your reference, exam fees for the current year ranged between €51 and €68 per subject.

Most of the examining boards work in a similar fashion, however if you would be interested in taking your exam through another board, other than Trinity Guildhall, please let me know and we will find out the appropriate information for you.

Also, please keep in mind that there may be additional fees for workbooks and other supporting materials to help prepare for these exams.
